Poultry Farm
The UConn Poultry Farm has been a part of the Storrs campus since the early 1940s, supporting teaching, research, and outreach in poultry production and management. Today, the facility combines historic farm structures with the modern Poultry Resource Unit — a state-of-the-art poultry housing and hatchery complex that reflects current industry standards.
Poultry Production and Facilities
The Poultry Farm focuses on raising White Leghorn breeder and egg-laying stocks and houses approximately 600 birds used for teaching, research, and fertile egg production.
The Poultry Resource Unit, opened in 2005, provides:
- Modern poultry housing systems
- Hatchery facilities
- Research spaces for genetics and mating studies
- Areas for class activities and student projects
By maintaining both traditional and modern production systems, the unit allows students and visitors to observe changes in housing, feeding, and watering technologies used across the poultry industry.
Research
The Poultry Unit supports research in poultry genetics, reproduction, management, and production efficiency. Faculty and students utilize the facilities for hands-on learning, independent research projects, and industry-relevant training.
Products and Services
The Poultry Unit produces fertile eggs and table eggs as part of its teaching and production mission.

- Standard Single Comb White Leghorn fertile eggs ($30 per dozen) available year-round
- Table eggs available through the UConn Dairy Bar
* Important Note: Please Contact Mary Margaret Smith at mary_margaret.smith@uconn.edu prior to placing your order to ensure product availability. There is also an additional packing fee of $15/box. It is the customer’s responsibility to pay for shipping costs, which requires a Fed-Ex or UPS account. Please call 860-486-2039 to arrange shipping with farm staff.
- Determine how many eggs you want to order. If you need up to five dozen eggs, you need to provide 72 hours’ notice. Larger orders require at least 7 days’ notice.
- Calculate the total cost of your order based on the price of $30.00 per dozen or $2.50 per egg, plus an additional $15.00 packaging fee per box shipped.
- Arrange for shipping. Fertile eggs are shipped Monday through Thursday via FedEx or UPS Next Day Air. The shipping charges are your responsibility. If you choose not to use a prepaid shipping label, you must provide FedEx or UPS account numbers at the time you order eggs. Email prepaid shipping labels to mary_margaret.smith@uconn.edu.
- Place your order by email or phone at 860-486-2039 and pay for it by credit card online.
- If you need to cancel your order, provide at least 72 hours’ notice for orders up to five dozen eggs and 7 days’ notice for larger egg orders.
