The Animal Science major at the University of Connecticut blends foundational science, innovation, and hands-on learning to prepare students for careers working with animals and animal-based systems. You’ll study the biology and management of animals through core disciplines such as genetics, physiology, nutrition, health, and behavior, gaining a comprehensive understanding of how animals contribute to food systems, human well-being, and society.

Animal Science students work with a wide range of species located directly on campus, including livestock and poultry that produce meat, milk, eggs, and fiber, as well as companion and performance animals such as horses, cats, and dogs. Whether your interests lie in animal health, biotechnology, food production, business, or veterinary medicine, the program equips you with the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to make a meaningful impact in animal-related industries.

Hands-on learning is central to the Animal Science experience. Many of our undergraduate students are employed by the department to work directly with animals and animal products, gaining invaluable real-world experience. Students also have access to professional internships, the University Honors Program, extracurricular organizations, and international internship opportunities ranging from a summer to a full academic year. Through collaborations across the Storrs campus, UConn Health, Yale School of Medicine, and other U.S. institutions and agencies, students are exposed to exciting, interdisciplinary opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.
