The Equine Science and Management major at the University of Connecticut blends foundational science, business principles, and hands-on learning to prepare students for successful careers in the equine industry. Students study the biology and management of horses through core disciplines such as genetics, physiology, nutrition, health, behavior, and exercise science, gaining a comprehensive understanding of equine care, performance, reproduction, and well-being.

Equine Science and Management students work directly with horses at UConn’s on-campus equine facilities, gaining experience in breeding, training, nutrition, stable operations, and sales. Whether your interests lie in riding instruction, farm management, equine training, reproduction, nutrition, rehabilitation, research, or equine business and marketing, the program equips students with the scientific knowledge, leadership skills, and practical experience needed to thrive in a wide range of equine careers.

Our program emphasizes collaboration, curiosity, and experiential learning. Students benefit from small class sizes, personalized advising, and close faculty mentorship from nationally and internationally recognized educators and researchers. Faculty members conduct impactful equine research and public service that advances horse health, performance, and management practices while supporting the broader equine industry.

Hands-on learning is central to the Equine Science and Management experience. Many of our undergraduate students are employed by the department to work directly with animals and animal products, gaining invaluable real-world experience. Students gain practical skills through applied coursework, independent studies, and on- and off-campus internships, as well as opportunities to participate in research alongside faculty experts. In addition, students can engage in riding lessons and competitive and recreational equine teams. Through these immersive opportunities, students graduate well prepared for leadership roles and advanced study in the equine industry.
