Facilities
The Department of Animal Science at the University of Connecticut is fortunate to have all of its teaching and animal facilities within walking distance of campus. The department maintains teaching and research units for beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep and swine. An indoor arena, with seating for 500 people, is available for both teaching and extracurricular activities. Teaching and research are carried out in several modern laboratories including a meats and food products laboratory and a dairy processing plant.
Our Facilities
Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory
The Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory is a state-of-the-art research facility supporting innovation in animal and agricultural sciences. Students work alongside faculty and graduate researchers through independent studies, laboratory experiences, and applied research projects.
Cattle Resource Unit
The Cattle Resource Unit houses dairy replacement heifers and beef cattle used in teaching, research, and extension programs. Students gain practical experience in animal management while supporting hands-on learning and industry-focused research.
UConn Creamery
The UConn Creamery produces the ice cream served at the UConn Dairy Bar using milk from the university’s dairy herd. The facility supports teaching, research, and outreach activities in dairy foods and food processing.
George C. White Building
The George C. White Building serves as the academic home of the Department of Animal Science and the UConn Creamery. The facility includes classrooms, laboratories, research spaces, and student resources that support teaching, discovery, and collaboration.
Horsebarn Hill Arena
The Horsebarn Hill Arena is a versatile indoor facility that supports equine education, competitions, and community events. It serves as a hub for classes, student activities, shows, and outreach programs throughout the year.
Horse Unit I
Horse Unit I is the department’s primary equine facility, supporting teaching, training, research, and outreach activities. Students gain hands-on experience working with the university’s horse herd in modern instructional and training environments.
Horse Unit II
Horse Unit II serves as a dedicated research and teaching facility with classroom, laboratory, and foaling spaces. The unit supports equine education and research while housing the UConn Morgan Breeding Program.
Kellogg Dairy Center
The Kellogg Dairy Center is a modern dairy facility featuring robotic milking technology and advanced herd management systems. Students engage in experiential learning while supporting research focused on animal care, milk production, and dairy innovation.
Livestock Unit
The Livestock Unit supports teaching and research programs with beef cattle, sheep, and swine. Students develop practical animal management skills through hands-on experiences, livestock exhibitions, and participation in industry-focused activities.
Lorentzon Stables
Lorentzon Stables provides specialized housing and rehabilitation space for polo horses and UConn Morgan stallions. The facility supports equine health, training, and management activities that enhance student learning opportunities.
Meat Science and Food Products Laboratories
The Meat Science and Food Products Laboratories provide specialized spaces for food processing, product development, and quality evaluation. Students gain practical experience while supporting research and teaching focused on food science and consumer preferences.
Poultry Farm
The Poultry Farm provides hands-on learning and research opportunities with laying hens, broilers, and breeding flocks. Students gain experience in poultry management, genetics, and production systems while supporting teaching, research, and outreach programs.
