Jonathan Husky

Associate Professor of Animal Science


Dr. Jonathan Husky joined the Department of Animal Science at the University of Connecticut in 2018 and currently serves as Associate Professor of Animal Science. His work focuses on dairy cattle nutrition, precision livestock management, animal welfare, and sustainable dairy production systems. He teaches courses in animal nutrition, dairy cattle management, and livestock production while conducting research on improving animal health, productivity, and environmental sustainability in dairy operations.

His scholarship has contributed to the development of data-driven management strategies that help dairy producers improve herd performance while reducing environmental impacts. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Husky serves on departmental curriculum committees, mentors undergraduate and graduate students, and collaborates with industry partners across the Northeast. His work supports Connecticut’s agricultural community through research, education, and outreach programs that strengthen the dairy and livestock sectors.

Teaching

ANSC 1001. Introduction to Animal Science

The biological, physical, and social factors that influence animal production and utilization.

ANSC 1111. Principles of Animal Nutrition and Feeding

Digestive anatomy of various species and the classes of nutrients including their digestion, metabolism and sources. Nutrient requirements and feeding standards for livestock, companion animals, exotics and aquatics for purposes of reproduction, lactation, growth, work and maintenance. Classes of feedstuffs, their characteristics, proper utilization, formulating rations and nutritional programs for animal enterprise. Taught with SAAS 113.

ANSC 1602. Behavior and Training of Domestic Animals

Application of behavior of cattle, horses, sheep, goats, swine, poultry, and companion animals to their management, training, and welfare. Basic principles of genetics and physiology of behavior, perception, training, learning, motivation, and stress with consideration of integrated behavioral management and animal welfare. Students are required to have access to an animal that they will train throughout the semester; the Department of Animal Science will not necessarily provide animals for training. Taught concurrently with SAAS 202.

Research

Dr. Husky conducts research in dairy cattle nutrition, precision livestock farming, and animal welfare. His work examines how nutrition, management practices, and emerging technologies influence animal health, productivity, and farm sustainability. Using automated monitoring systems, sensor technologies, nutritional interventions, and statistical modeling, his research identifies strategies that improve livestock performance while promoting animal well-being.

Current projects focus on precision feeding systems, methane mitigation strategies, health monitoring technologies, and the use of machine learning tools to support dairy management decisions. Collaborations with dairy producers, agricultural organizations, technology companies, and government agencies help translate research findings into practical applications. This work contributes to sustainable agriculture, food production, animal welfare, and agricultural workforce development.

Professor Husky contributes to professional and community engagement through the American Society of Animal Science, regional dairy producer organizations, UConn Extension programs, and agricultural workforce development initiatives. He regularly presents educational workshops for producers, collaborates with industry stakeholders on applied research projects, and mentors students pursuing careers in animal agriculture. His service supports dairy producers, livestock managers, students, and agricultural communities throughout Connecticut and the Northeast.
